THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

The course looks at the history of South, Southeast, and East Asian architecture as a whole, with a focus on architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design, and city planning, with three key themes in mind: sustainability, tradition and modernity, and globalisation. These themes will guide the organisation of weekly lectures and projects, which will progress from establishing a basic theoretical apparatus to examining specific cases. Through research posters and oral presentations, students will gain an understanding of Asian architecture and urbanism and interpret Asian architectural language.

PROJECT 1. Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street
This project is a compilation task based on sketching that takes place on a specific street. I created a sketch journal with annotations and hand-drawn sketches of the streetscapes and intangible aspects of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee based on site visits and online data research.

PROJECT 2. Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture

Our final project as a group of seven was an extended in-depth study of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, which we had done briefly in project 1.
An analysis framework was developed, which was followed by branching out into research topics that were of interest to us along the way, where we eventually proposed solutions to the stated issues.
